ROBERTO ZUCCO

Maladype Theatre (Budapest)
Mini teater (Ljubljana) – Novo kazalište (Zagreb)

Bernard-Marie Koltès
ROBERTO ZUCCO
Directed by Ivica Buljan

A powerful psychological thriller based on a true story, Roberto Zucco follows the sinister adventure of a serial killer. Italian young lost soul, aged 18, was sent to prison after violently murdering his parents. Five years later he escaped and went on the run, defying police in three countries. Changing his identity many times, he embarked on a horrific two-year crime spree undetected. A cross between Tarantino and Žižek, working over the themes of Hamlet, and reaching back to the myths of Oedipus and Icarus; this play brings the suspense of film noir to the stage.

DAWN

Hodworks (Budapest)
DAWN
Choreographed by Adrienn Hód

The naked human body takes centre stage. It opens up in front of us like a landscape, dressed in the outlines of the muscles, the wrinkles of the skin and its flushed texture. We get to witness the body’s anatomical-mechanical nature or ‘animal-like quality’, which is so much of a taboo of our times. The continuity of the interactions and the unstoppable series of changes turn this daring piece into a performance which demands an exceptionally high level of consciousness, strength, and sensitivity from the dancers. Dawn is an autonomous and radical research of the body, free from prejudices.

CONDITIONS OF BEING A MORTAL

Hodworks (Budapest)
CONDITIONS OF BEING A MORTAL
Choreographed by Adrienn Hód

After the stripped down, radical corporeality of Dawn, this production (Conditions of Being a Mortal) is physicality, woven into a chain of emotions.  The subconscious opens in a trance invoked by continuous movement. Splinters of sexuality, arias of impulsive gasps, a game of robust yet refined and sensitive humor, negating taboos. The torsos of four dancers rendered as a tangling of their inner histories. A negotiation between heaven and earth, and a triumph over prosaic urban reality.

MOLIÈRE’S DON JUAN

Maladype Theatre (Budapest)
Bertolt Brecht
MOLIÈRE’S DON JUAN
Directed by Sándor Zsótér

Even for those who have never read or seen any Don Juan stories in their lives, the name Don Juan means the tempter, the irresistible type of man. But where does this charm come from? Nice appearance? Gentility? Money? Nice words? Disarming gall? Extravagance? The excitement of sin and viciousness?
Brecht turns this around – he does not concentrate on the figure of Don Juan but on the motives that make us create Don Juans.

TOLDI

Forte Company – University of Theatre and Film Arts (Budapest)
János Arany
TOLDI
Performance by the 2014 Choreographer-Director for Physical Theatre Class
Directed and choreographed by Csaba Horváth

What happens when János Arany and contemporary theatre meet? Can a performance function if, while applying the theatrical toolkit of modern theatre (a combination of singing, music, dance, and movement), it is based on the original, unabridged version of the most classical of our classical texts? Yes it can… and how! (…) The piece is dynamic, exciting… Besides, it shows that the story and text of János Arany’s 1846 work is not dusty at all. It’s lively, legitimate, and contemporary the way it is. One only has to find the way by which today’s men can experience how exciting, complex, and amusing Toldi is.

Is there a place, where children cry delight,
A father has a daughter – son, a mother?
Where even dreaded death is calm, and white,
With lilies for farewell, placed by a brother?

ELIZABETH I

Szkéné Theatre – Vádli Theatre Company – FÜGE (Budapest)
Paul Foster
ELIZABETH I
Created by Rémusz Szikszai, based on Szabolcs Várady’s translation.
Directed by Rémusz Szikszai

Paul Foster’s Elizabeth I is about the creator of modern England, one of the greatest and most controversial figures of world history. Elizabeth’s name marks a whole era, the transition from the medieval to the new, modern world. Beyond her extraordinary personality, exactly this is what makes her interesting from a theatrical point of view: she was living in an epoch that was in many ways similar to ours: her world and people were also facing radical changes.
